How to Watch Videos from Your iPod on Your PC or Television

If you have an iPod, you can view the movies that are stored on it:
  • Directly on the iPod
  • On your PC
  • On your television
To watch movies directly on the iPod, just use the menu and go to Videos / Movies and select your movie. We'll detail the other two options, which are a bit more involved.

Watching movies from the iPod on your PC

  1. Make sure the iPod is connected to your computer.
  2. Start the iTunes software - if you don't have it installed, you can freely get it from Apple: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
  3. Look for your iPod under "DEVICES" in the left, and then below it, look for a node called "Movies" and click it.
  4. In the main window, you should see a list of all the movies from the iPod.
  5. Double click the movie to play it: this will open a separate player window in which the movie will start.
  6. From the same window you'll be able to control playback and volume, resize the video, and go full screen.

Watching movies from the iPod on your Television

First of all, in order to play the movies on your TV, you will need a dock for the iPod that provides composite and S-video outputs that you can connect to the TV. There are docks available from Apple, or from third parties:
  • Apple iPod Universal Dock
  • DLO HomeDock
  • iSee 360
  • HomeDock Deluxe
  1. Connect the dock to your TV, and then insert the iPod into the dock.
  2. In the iPod, navigate to Videos / Video Settings / TV Out. Select one of the following options:
    • On - the video will be shown only on TV; it will not play on the iPod display
    • Ask - before the video plays, you will be asked whether to play it on the iPod or on the TV
    • (There is also an Off option, but if you chose that, you won't be able to see the movie on the TV)
  3. From the same menu location, configure the TV Signal option:
    • NTSC - if you live in North America or Japan
    • PAL - for other countries
  4. You can also configure the Widescreen setting from here, that controls how the movie will be fit on the screen. You have the following options:
    • Off - this will make the movie use the entire screen, so you'll be able to watch it better; however, if the movie is widescreen, this option might crop the left and right of the image
    • On - select this for widescreen movies, to prevent cropping
  5. Once you've set these options, start your TV, make it show the input from the dock, and start the movie from the iPod.
  6. If the dock has a remote control, you can use it to play and control the video.
